Applications are open for the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology, Exploration, and Scientific Innovation until October 15.

A partnership between NASA’s Astrobiology Program and the Library of Congress, the Blumberg Chair, an annually selected position, supports a scholar in the sciences, social sciences, or the humanities to take up residence in the Library’s John W. Kluge Center.

The Blumberg Chair creates an opportunity to research the range and complexity of societal issues related to how life begins and evolves, and to examine philosophical, religious, literary, ethical, legal, cultural and other concerns arising from scientific research on the origin, evolution, and nature of life.

At 7pm today, Professor George Chauncey will formally receive the John W. Kluge Prize for the Study of Humanity from Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in a livestreamed event from the Great Hall of the Library of Congress.

Chauncey is DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History at Columbia University. Chauncey is known for his pioneering 1994 history “Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940,” his 2004 book “Why Marriage? The History Shaping Today’s Debate over Gay Equality,” and his testimony and other work as an expert witness in more than 30 court cases related to LGBTQ+ rights. These include such landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases as Romer v. Evans (1996), Lawrence v. Texas (2003), and the marriage equality cases United States v. Windsor (2013) and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015).

Chauncey is collaborating with the Library of Congress on an upcoming slate of public events exploring LGBTQ+ history, which will begin in 2023.

Wednesday, August 3: General Washington and Mrs. French: Widows and Power in 18th Century Virginia

One month after the battle that ended the Revolutionary War, George Washington wrote a neighbor, Benjamin Tasker Dulany, about a tract of land adjacent to his own that he wanted for himself. The land belonged to Dulany’s mother-in-law, widow Penelope Manley French. French, however, did not want to relinquish her land, telling her daughter that a deal “shall never take place while I live.”

The multi-year struggle between Washington and French over her land is documented in letters and diaries in the George Washington Papers at the Library of Congress. None of them, however, were written by French herself, since she delegated her dealings with Washington to her brother and son-in-law. French’s story shows how a widow, empowered by laws that allowed her to control her property, also felt unable to challenge cultural norms that required women to leave business dealings to men. It also demonstrates how Washington’s papers can be a rich and unexpected source of information about the lives of the people who populated his world.

Julie Miller, Library of Congress Staff Fellow at the John W. Kluge Center, and early American specialist in the Manuscript Division, is exploring the story of Penelope French. The Kluge Center’s Andrew Breiner will interview Miller, as well as Martha Saxton, Amherst College historian emerita and author of The Widow Washington: The Life of Mary Washington, and Jennifer Stertzer, director of the Papers of George Washington at the University of Virginia.

News from the John W. Kluge Center: The Technical Advisor: Michael Lindsay and the Chinese Communist Quest for Technology during World War II

Join the John W. Kluge Center and Susan V. Lawrence for The Technical Advisor: Michael Lindsay and the Chinese Communist Quest for Technology during World War II, Monday, July 18 at 4pm.

In 1937, Japan launched an all-out invasion of China. The army of the Republic of China and the forces of the Chinese Communists, joined in an uneasy alliance, struggled to resist the inexorable Japanese advances.

Michael Lindsay arrived in China in early 1938 to teach at a missionary university in Peking. As the war ground on, he found he could use his technical skills and special status as a British national to support the Communist-led underground resistance movement in the city. In December 1941, Pearl Harbor changed the terms of the conflict, forcing Lindsay and his new bride out of Peking and sending them to join the Communists in their territories in north China. From 1942 to 1944, Lindsay trained Communist troops in radio technology and battlefield communications. In 1944, the couple, now with a young daughter, moved to the Communists’ wartime capital, Yan’an, where Lindsay transformed the Communists’ news broadcast technology to allow them to get their story out to the world. Lindsay’s students would go on to become central figures in the technological development of the People’s Republic of China after 1949.

Susan V. Lawrence will discuss her research on Lindsay and the Chinese Communists’ quest for technological advancement during World War II, in a public event held in room LJ-119 of the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building, on Monday, July 18 at 4 pm.

Lawrence, a Staff Fellow at the Kluge Center, has worked at the Library of Congress since 2010. Earlier in her career, she spent a cumulative 11 years in Beijing as a bureau chief and staff reporter for major U.S. news organizations. Lawrence earned her A.B. and A.M. in East Asian studies from Harvard University. She first lived in China from 1985 to 1987 as a Harvard-Yenching Institute scholar at Peking University.

George Chauncey, Historian of LGBTQ+ Life, Wins 2022 Kluge Prize

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced today that historian George Chauncey will receive the 2022 John W. Kluge Prize for Achievement in the Study of Humanity. Chauncey is the DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History at Columbia University, a position he has held since 2017, and he directs the Columbia Research Institute on the Global History of Sexualities.

Chauncey is the first scholar in LGBTQ+ studies to receive the prize. He is known for his pioneering 1994 history “Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940,” his 2004 book “Why Marriage? The History Shaping Today’s Debate over Gay Equality,” and his testimony and other work as an expert witness in more than 30 court cases related to LGBTQ+ rights.

“Gay New York,” released in 1994 during the 25th anniversary of the LGBTQ+ rights protests at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, looks at the gay community in New York City before World War II, utilizing newspapers, police records, oral histories, diaries, and other primary sources to show that there was a much more vibrant and visible gay world than previously believed and to argue that there was a permeable boundary between straight and gay behavior, especially among working-class men.

“Why Marriage?” draws on Chauncey’s extensive research prepared for court cases in which he provided expert testimony. It traces the history of both gay and anti-gay activism and discusses the origins of the modern struggle for gay marriage.

Chauncey received a Bachelor of Arts and a doctorate from Yale University. He was the Samuel Knight Professor of History & American Studies at Yale from 2006 to 2017, and held posts as chair of the History Department, chair of the Committee for LGBT Studies, and director of graduate studies and undergraduate studies for the American Studies program. He was awarded Yale’s teaching prize for his lecture course on U.S. Lesbian and Gay History, which more than 300 students took the final time he taught it.  Chauncey taught at the University of Chicago from 1991 through 2006.  He is married to Ronald Gregg, a film historian and director of the MA program in Film and Media Studies at Columbia.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Kluge Prize,” Chauncey said, “and grateful that the Library of Congress has recognized the importance and vibrancy of the field of LGBTQ history.” 

The Library will collaborate with Chauncey to create programming to bring his expertise on LGBTQ+ history to the public and policymakers in an accessible, engaging way. Stay tuned to learn about future public programming as it is planned.

About the Kluge Prize

The Kluge Prize recognizes individuals whose outstanding scholarship in the humanities and social sciences has shaped public affairs and civil society. Awarded to a scholar every two years, the international prize highlights the value of researchers who communicate beyond the scholarly community and have had a major impact on social and political issues. The prize comes with a $500,000 award. Additional funds from the Library’s Kluge endowment, which funds the award, are being invested in Kluge Center programming.

George Chauncey joins a prestigious group of past prize winners that includes philosopher Jürgen Habermas, former president of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and scholar of African American history John Hope Franklin, among others.

Steve Swayne is the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professor of Music at Dartmouth College, where he teaches courses in art music from 1700 to the present day, opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. Swayne is President of the American Musicological Society, the premier organization for musicologists in the English-speaking world as well as an accomplished concert pianist. Swayne completed his PhD at UC Berkeley in 1999.

Steve Swayne is the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professor of Music at Dartmouth College, where he teaches courses in art music from 1700 to the present day, opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. Swayne is President of the American Musicological Society, the premier organization for musicologists in the English-speaking world as well as an accomplished concert pianist. Swayne completed his PhD at UC Berkeley in 1999.

Beth Simone Noveck is a professor at Northeastern University, where she directs the Burnes Center for Social Change and its partner project, The Governance Lab (The GovLab) and its MacArthur Research Network on Opening Governance. She is a member of the Library of Congress Scholars Council. The author of Solving Public Problems: How to Fix Our Government and Change Our World (Yale Press 2021) (Named a Best Book of 2021 by Stanford Social Innovation Review), she is also Core Faculty at the Institute for Experiential AI (IEAI) at Northeastern. New Jersey governor Phil Murphy appointed her as the state’s first Chief Innovation Officer.
